The conflict in Gaza threatens to engulf the Middle East in a wider war with flashpoints including Lebanon, the Red Sea, Iraq and Syria.  The US is being drawn into these escalating conflicts. Since October, the US has launched airstrikes in Yemen and has bombed Iraq and Syria numerous times. Three US soldiers stationed in Iraq have lost their lives, leading to some calls for even greater US intervention in the region. We asked two experts on the region to help us understand the current tensions and the possibilities for preventing further escalation. Join us for their presentations, followed by discussion.

Richard Falk is a scholar of international law and international relations, who taught at Princeton and now teaches at UC Santa Barbara.  He chairs the board of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, and also the Project on Global Climate Change, Human Security and Democracy at UC Santa Barbara.  He was Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Occupied Palestine.  He is the author of many books on the danger of nuclear war and global climate change, and the need for a humane global order.

Joseph Gerson is Executive Director of the Campaign for Peace, Disarmament and Common Security, and Vice-President of the International Peace Bureau.  Since 1976 he has served as director of the Peace and Economic Security Program of the American Friends Service Committee.  He is a member of the international steering committee of the Global Campaign on Military Spending.  Gerson has written several books on the danger posed by nuclear arms and the international reach of the US military.
